Good Blogs on Small Islands

James Mirtle put out a list of blogs on his Globe and Mail “blog” of 10 blogs “of note.” It points out the big guns, the blogs who get a lot of attention, but don’t need the help. Just like a hockey game, someone needs the two points more then the other guy. The big guns are big already. Let’s shine some light on the lesser known.

Wild Puck Banter – When the season started, Roy of WPB started doing game recaps. After a while, it burned him out, and that is where he really found his voice. Roy has a take on things, a sense of humor, and a good eye for hockey. He doesn’t get the attention he deserves.

Theory of Ice – This is one of the most interesting new blogs around. Following the Montreal Canadiens, “E” (the author) also keeps things interesting with compelling theories about the overall picture of the game. Get over there, something exciting is happening.

Scarlett Ice – Women in hockey blogging doesn’t surprise me. Go to a game, and see how many passionate female fans there are. Even if the NHL is an all male league, there is women’s hockey everywhere. And there are a lot of bloggers who happen to be women. Sherry is one of the best. She follows the Ottawa Senators, and has a great sense of humor (some would say you have to). She also contributes to HLOG (Hockey Ladies of Greatness) and could probably drink you under the table.

Waiting for Stanley – Still a damn good blog. Zanstorm has taken over the reigns here, but these guys were a real inspiration to me when I was starting out. Along the off season, we kept each other going and cracked each other up. In the Great Sidebar Wars of 2006, they won hands down.

Army of the Ohio – I still don’t get the title, but I get the blog. The Blue Jackets are lucky to have this blog around and on their side. Just plain well done. Nuff’ said.

There are more. Plenty more. This is just a small sampling of the good stuff. Go read these blogs, tell them you are listening to what they have to say. believe me, it makes a difference.

  1. Ooh, ooh! I can answer that inquiry!

The “Army of the Ohio” was a term for one of the Union armies that took part in the Civil War, mainly comprised of soldiers from Ohio and the states neighboring it. And since the Blue Jackets’ name is also a throwback to Ohio having the most casualties (and churning out the most uniforms made), it just seemed fitting.

And thank you very much for the compliment, Tape! Honestly, I’d been having trouble lately trying to just decide what to do with AotO, but the recognition here definitely motivates me a ton. 😀

  2. Tapeleg, you have no idea how extremely flattered I am! Really, I’m totally blushing here and it’s very much appreciated. You’ve been very supportive in this venture and I owe you alot for the motivation.

And I haven’t had any need yet this season to drink anybody under the table but if anybody wants to challenge me, I’d prefer it be on a non-school night.

  3. Thanks, dude!
I’m not sure I won the sidebar war though! I stole some ideas off you and that counts for something, right?
It’s too bad Hodge and Beaner lost interest, but I’ll keep it going.
Dang, this blog looks good on WordPress. Nothing beats a 3-column template, hey?

  4. there really is nothing like a compliment from someone you respect, is there? you know, this was actually the first hockey blog i ever read (way back when), and the first inkling i had that there might be an audience out there for a creatively-imagined hockey obsession.

you’re sort of becoming the patron saint of aspiring internet hockey writers, what with all your encouraging comments and shout-outs and whatnot. we should produce a series of jar candles and medallions.

also, do i get a prize for literally being on a small island?

  5. Thanks for the shout, Taper. Just remember us little guys when you’re taking over for Kukla.

By the way, we’re all waiting for another jersey post.
