The Avs Right Now

I haven’t talked about the Avalanche for a while, as I’ve been trying to not be just an Avalanche blog. Also, they have been so up and down lately, it’s been hard to say much. But here are some of the things, just quick little hits, I’ve seen, thought, heard, observed, and obsessed over lately.

Theodore has taken a back seat to Peter Budaj. Last season, I didn’t care much for Budaj. As far as I was concerned, he was better than Sauve, but had huge rebound problems. This season, he has stepped up to the plate and answered the call of duty. He is a cliche machine right now.

Twelve shots against the Red Wings. Twelve. There was a little screwing over by the refs, a huge penalty that was missed when it was still a 1-0 game, but there was no real excuse. Twelve.

I can’t believe I still hear people say that Forsberg will come back to Colorado. There is no money for him. Don’t even think it.

The best two games I went to this year were the Wings – Avs games. One win, one shootout loss. Both nights, I came home with no voice. After paying small money for some good games in the minors, it takes a good amount to feel I get good value for an Avs game. These two were totally worth it.

Liles being out has taken it’s toll on the team. It shows how thin the team is on the defense, but the scoring touch the team has shown isn’t there often enough.

The Joel Quenneville commercials they play on Altitude (the Avs television station) are exactly how I feel about him: Car salesman.

Jordon Leopold looks like he really cares about playing on this team. He may have been out for a long time, but now that we really need him, he’s working his ass off.

These are not the Avs of old, and it would be easy to give up on the team. Not me. This is not a good year for the Avs, but so far, they are outplaying the early expectations of just about everyone. Still in the hunt. Even tonights loss to the Wild isn’t going to dissuade me.
