Is There a Problem with the New Team Canada Jerseys?

Nike, we have a problem.

There was plenty of hoopla and fanfare surrounding the release of the new Team Canada Olympic hockey jerseys. As you may know, the IOC decided that the actual logos of the team’s governing bodies would not be allowed on team jerseys (this was also behind the changes made to the USA Hockey jerseys). The jerseys themselves we released to the public this Monday.

My girlfriend and I are rarely ones to pass up a new jersey, and once she saw the new crest on the front, she was more than happy to get one. So now, we own a red Team Canada jersey (despite the fact that it looks a little like a Red Wings jersey). We even took it to the Women’s National Team vs. U-22 Women’s game that night.

Thursday was the first time we washed the jersey (cold water, Tide Free, Bounce Free dryer sheet), but what we saw afterwards was disturbing:

You can click any of the images to make them bigger (and I think you may want to, for better detail of the damage)

See those white parts in the crest? They aren’t supposed to be there. Our first thought was soap residue, but that isn’t the case (liquid soap free of dyes and perfumes). It appears whatever was used to create the pattern on the crest has come off. You can see it in more detail here:

Notice the weave is still intact and visible where the pattern is missing:

The dimes in this picture are placed there for scale (one from the USA and one from Canada so we all know what we are talking about here):

This is a major problem. While I am trying not to be inflammatory or spout off with accusations without any further investigation or correspondence with the manufacturer or Hockey Canada (obviously not their fault, but since they are here in Calgary, I may wind up talking to them), but this doesn’t bode well. Is a jersey that costs $120 CAD ($109.90 US from my last exchange rate check) not able to stand up to one single washing machine cycle?

I want to be clear. I have not yet contacted anyone about this. I have not talked to anyone at Nike, or Hockey Canada, or the place we bought it at (in Banff). I am not yet a dissatisfied customer (other than inconvenience) because I haven’t had any interaction with anyone responsible for the jersey.

But this is an issue. And I will be pursuing it until satisfied.

Has anyone else had problems with their jerseys? Please contact me or let people know in the comments.

Swag Report: Bakersfield Condors

On to the good stuff.

SWAG!
Condorsswag007

A basic puck. But I went to two games, which means two pucks. And since it was Links-for-Love weekend:
Condorsswag004

OK, you already saw this jersey:
Condorsswag003-1 Condorsswag000

But you only caught a glimpse of this one:
Condorsswag015

This is a Brian McCarthy Charity Game Worn jersey. And as far as “pink jerseys” are concerned, this one isn’t bad. You may want to tuck it in (jersey foul) if you are too concerned with your manhood.

The secret to jersey collecting is to get things that are special to you. It doesn’t matter what everyone else in the world thinks about your jersey, so long as you are happy with it. Why would you get a jersey from a player you don’t like or respect? Your jersey should only satisfy yourself. I wanted this jersey for a few reasons. One was that the money went to charity. Another was that this is a great reminder of what a great weekend this was. Also, and this was a big consideration, Brian was one of my teammates for the Hockey-thon (if you look at this picture, he’s the one in the white helmet on the left). I didn’t talk to him much, mostly because I was trying not to completely embarrass myself (FAIL!!!). But still, I wanted one that one of my teammates, and the other two Condors player’s jerseys were well out of my price range.
Condorsswag013
Yeah, that’s right, it’s signed. And since it was used during a charity alumni game, it certainly was devoid of marks.

Projoy is the jersey manufacturer.

Plenty of good swag, and a new jersey. What more could I ask for? Stockton Thunder is next.

Beckford-Tseu Alaska Aces GW Jersey: Merry Christmas to Me

One of the great things about shopping for me on christmas is that you can’t go wrong with a jersey (unless it’s a Wings jersey, then forget it, you are dead to me). This one is a fine example of what works:

Chris Beckford-Tseu Game Worn 2007-08 Alaska Aces

P1020145
First off, I don’t have any jerseys of this color.

Second, I saw Mr. Beckford-Tseu at St. Louis Blues training camp, and thought he had great work ethic. I liked his play.

Third, he won a Kelly Cup in the ECHL.

Fourth, can you imagine the travel this jersey has seen?

Fifth, it has a Union sponsor patch and the 20th Anniversary of the ECHL patch. See?

P1020147 P1020148
Sixth, his name is huge.

P1020151

Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year, eh?

note: I am going to see the Aces on my west coast hockey tour, but not as many times, thanks to the Fresno Falcons folding.

Happy Holidays, JAHL Style

Merry Christmas, everyone, plus whatever you celebrate at this time of year. And here is a jersey to get you in the mood (or take you out of it):

P1020165

No, that is not game worn, and yes, it is on tour with us. Enjoy.

ESPN Reports on Self, Melrose

ESPN just loves to talk about itself. If the worldwide leader isn’t doing it, it isn’t news. What could possibly be more entertaining than one of it’s own analysts in the news, this time in a positive way:

Former Los Angeles Kings coach Barry Melrose brushed aside a rumor he is in line to become the next head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, saying he is enjoying his life as an ESPN analyst.

“This is no different than any of the last 10 years,” Melrose said in response to a report in the Toronto Star. “I’ve been contacted by a handful of clubs every year since joining ESPN. My desire to coach again has never been a secret, but I love what I do at ESPN.”

I bet he sure does love what he does at ESPN. As the only face of hockey, he has to actually work somewhere around two hours a day (I would speculate). Why would you leave all the glory as one of the most recognizable faces of hockey in the US, and have so little to do?

Try this on your sports loving friends who don’t track hockey. Hold up a picture of Melrose, and let them guess who he is. Then hold up a picture of John Tortorella, and see how they do. Dollar to “Have another donut,” you know what is going to happen.

Classic ESPN narcissism. If the World Wide Leader doesn’t report on it, it doesn’t exist. And if they are talking about themselves, they are the happiest sports network on earth.

Patchify your Jersey

Yes, the tradition of turning nouns into verbs continues. Do you have an NHL jersey that just isn’t flashy enough for you? Do you need that little extra thing to set it off from the crowd? I am a patch hound. I love getting appropriate patches for my jerseys, such as all-star, Stanley Cup, and anniversary patches.

River City Sports (who are not a sponsor, as this is an ad-free zone) are having a sale on all sorts of patches right now, including the Stanley Cup patches. And they even have a patch for Canucks fans. Get something fun, and look back at some old photos, to make sure where the patch goes. Nothing as sad as a Stanley Cup patch going on the wrong side (I’m not telling).

Get ye to the sale!

Vintage or “Vintage?: Winter Classic Jerseys

It’s more crazy marketing from the NHL, but it could have some interesting speculation. At the Winter Classic, the outdoor game in Buffalo you couldn’t get tickets to, the Penguins and Sabres are going to be facing off in brand new, “Vintage” jerseys, made by Reebok.

The Buffalo Sabres doesn’t look that far off the mark. I don’t think anyone is going to bat an eye at this. I wonder how many will be sold, if nostalgia will prevail, or if everyone who wants an older style Sabres jersey has one.

Sabres

The Penguins on the other hand:
Screenshot 02-4

Now that’s a “Vintage” jersey. Or at least, a recreation of a vintage jersey. According to www.pittsburghhockey.net, the jersey this was based on was used from 1968 until 1972. This jersey was out in circulation, and being sold as recent as 2004, but I haven’t seen it lately. I really like the jersey, but it’s a new jersey from Reebok, right? We all know what happens to new jerseys from Reebok, they get EDGE-ified, right?

Well, yes, but look at that cut. That isn’t the new slicker, tighter, faster, never-gonna-go-back cut of the new EDGE jerseys. And how about this, from the NHL online store in the product description:

Patented mid-weight air knit 100% polyester

Air knit. If you don’t know what air knit is, go back about a year. Air knit is what NHL jerseys were made of before the EDGE system took over the world. So, let the wild speculation begin. Is RBK giving up on the new materials? Are they willing to let go of “years” of research that wound up being useless in the face of game situations? Are we going to get out beloved hockey jersey back?

I’m not holding my breath on that one.

Your shopping options are many, but I have always been a fan of River City Sports. They have great customer service, still have a bunch of the old (good) style jerseys, and decent prices. You can find the Sabres jersey here, the Penguins jersey here, and the Crosby version here. But there is no way I’m shelling out $133.99 for these jerseys. That’s a $44 markup. Good luck with that, RBK. I’m sure you will make a fortune.

The New Jerseys: A Cautionary Tale

This is almost a week old, but I think it’s important reading for anyone who is thinking about buying a new RBK EDGE jersey.

Mike Chen buys a new jersey: RBK=CRP

Always remember, especially with the new cut, new materials, and new prices… Try before you buy.

AHL Jersey Update: Portland, Manitoba, and Rockford

Three new jerseys to show you from the AHL. First up, the Portland Pirates:

Fb913248480987A00Ebca85Fb8D2A042.300

Ec3D629Adaf509D38Adab5931D8C0Fe3.300

5F108F628465Bfc4Bb39Ad7E0E80C1Cd.300

I still don’t understand the amount of teams to put those white lines on the upper chest by the armpits. It must be some sort of seam, or was gently suggested by RBK or something. I think they look like a$$.

Next up, the Manitoba Moose:

D0D3A6057Fc22Fe7280Fe72A0C2D21A7.300

Not bad, especially if they leave that stupid logo off the shoulders from previous years. (Zing!)

Finally, a favorite of mine, the Rockford IceHogs:

19Bca8B0251Da9Bd529Cf3A552B2880D.300

Up from the UHL, new to the AHL, they are certainly following the look of their new affiliate, the Chicago Blackhawks.
C798D05B5Ac7F46E619B395161Dd78Ee.300

Yeah, I like the old ones better.
