AHL Keeps Rolling, Gets Scooped

The AHL continues to roll out the new jerseys at an alarmingly slow pace. Here are the Quad City Mallards Flames:

Afdc053Ffcad078A039707C1C8B5346B.300

Wow. I mean, whoopee. That should take the sting of losing the Mallards, a team the Quad City area loved (Of course, the UHL has tanked faster than my career lately. Zing!).

Here are a better look at the Grand Rapids Griffins jerseys:

Wow, you guys look excited to be there. No, I wouldn’t be either.

As for the scooping, Brushback, serving out a poor retirement, has pictures of the new Wolfpack jerseys on sidearm delivery. Tell him I sent you, maybe we can get him back on board. In a landscape that has filled up with hockey blogs, his was is one of the best

Jersey: $25 Denver Pioneers

Just throwing this one out there. I found this one on a clearance rack in Appleton, WI. Yes, it was only $25 bucks.

Dscn0530

That would be the Denver Pioneers. How do I know?
Dscn0531

I have yet to see a DU game live, but I think it’s going to happen this year, if I get back to Denver in time.

The jersey is freaking huge. The collar is gigantic, and wearing it is like wearing a blanket. I put the skate lace in myself, because I like the look.

Feed readers: there are pictures in this post, and a lot of my posts lately. If you don’t see them, or a post makes no sense, go to the main blog. See what you are missing.

Jersey Post: Colorado Gold Kings Game Worn Ryan Schmidt

The original title of this post was going to be Ryan Schmidt, Well Travelled, Virtually Unknown. That was until I got something in the mail:

Dscn0494

Sometimes, you run across something that just blows you mind. I would have never known about Ryan Schmidt if it weren’t for a game worn jersey that came up on ebay. Ryan Schmidt may never have thought anyone would run into his stats, but after you see this, you may understand. This is the playing history from the Internet Hockey Database page for Ryan Schmidt:

1990-91 Sioux City Musketeers
1992-93 Waterloo Black Hawks
1992-93 Fort Worth Fire
1993-94 Dallas Freeze
1994-95 Roanoke Express
1994-95 Toledo Storm
1994-95 Utica Blizzard
1994-95 Detroit Falcons
1995-96 West-Palm-Beach Barracudas
1995-96 Wichita Thunder
1996-97 Amarillo Rattlers
1996-97 Dayton Ice Bandits
1997-98 Fayetteville Force
1998-99 Mobile Mysticks
1998-99 Macon Whoopee
1998-99 Fort Worth Fire
1999-00 Fayetteville Force
2000-01 Colorado Gold Kings
2000-01 Phoenix Mustangs
2000-01 Bakersfield Condors

Oh…My…God… That is staggering. I’m pretty well travelled, but I don’t have anything on this guy. And remember, half of his games were probably road games. If there is a minor leaguer who has stories to tell, it’s probably Ryan Schmidt.

Want to know what else is impressive? How about his penalty minutes? In 415 games, he had 1074 penalty minutes. As for scoring, he had 15 goals and 63 assists for 78 points. I think he had a job, knew his job, and did it often.

Dscn0495

From the wear on the sleeve, it looks like he did that job in this jersey:
Dscn0499
So, where is Ryan now? A look through the interweb brought up this. From the East Coast Eagles:

Ryan Schmidt returns again this season as the ECE Skills Coach. Ryan played professionally for nine years and is a former CHL All-Star. After completing his professional hockey career, he moved into coaching and teaching hockey skills. For the last 15 years, Coach Schmidt has taught players of all skill levels including house, travel, AA, AAA, NAJHL, OHL, CCHA, ECHL, IHL, and members from the 1998 Women’s Olympic Team. Ryan is a native of the Detroit Metro area. He now resides in Raleigh and also operates the Pro Hockey School which focuses on assisting players to achieve their goals and move their game to the next level.

How cool is that? How many people with his career are still involved in hockey? What drives a person to continue after the career this man has had?

This is his hockey camp.

I’m so glad I have this jersey. It represents a completely different side of hockey that we rarely think about. With the NHL being the main exposure we get to the game, it’s easy to forget the game being played in front of a handful of fans, in places you wouldn’t expect, for little or no glory, and even less money. I’m happy I have this jersey so I can tell people about this guy. Incredible.

Three New AHL Jerseys

Three more for you. Here is the Grand Rapids Griffins:

 Ism3 Thumbcache 0D8A52432B41A751Caf0B5D2F2A9E37F.300

Take it or leave it. I think it’s better than some, but it doesn’t do much for me.

Next up, the Hamilton Bulldogs:

 Ism3 Thumbcache 852788A628Dc9602B4E253Fd7785C6Df.300

This is one I think we are going to need to see in real life to tell, but it looks OK.

Finally, the San Antonio Rampage:
 Ism3 Thumbcache B31Bc5A6E966648A6859125Dc4F58269.300

Uh… Right. Not much better than the Milwaukee Admirals jersey of last year. And that ain’t saying much.

More to come, folks. Stick around.

AHL Jersey Update: Manchester Monarchs

Manchester is the latest AHL team to release their new jersey:

Monarchs Jerseys

The Monarchs are sticking with the new trend of logo and city name on the jersey. I wonder if anyone will see it, put way down there, and a players tendency to bend at the waist when skating. Good job, guys. Sleeves must be difficult to pull off with these new jerseys. Just when you think you are out of the woods, bam, here are a few crowns on the sleeves.

As a side thought, you would think that purple would be a hard color for hockey teams (if not any sports team) to pull off, but it works for me.

Wanna See a Lot of Jerseys?

I have a lot of jerseys. No, really, I have counted them. I have a lot. I’m not bragging or anything, I just like jerseys.

Not like this guy. I’m assuming he owns them all. I thought I was obsessed, but now I feel very healthy. Seriously, take a minute and click on that link. Marvel at the jerseys. Simply an amazing collection from a league that has seen it’s heyday come and go.

One day, I may achieve his level. A grand master, this guy.

The AHL Continues to Boggle Minds

Three new jerseys on the AHL front. Let’s start with the Toronto Marlies:

Marlies

Simple, basic, and falls roughly in line with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Good job.

Next, the Springfield Falcons:
Falcons

Aside from keeping the (stupid) talons on the sleeves, a decent effort. Better luck next season.

And finally, the Philadelphia Phantoms:

Phantoms Front

Wow. Nice one. Even with the purple by the shoulders, I like this jersey. Even with the wacky colors, which were there before, this is a nice look.

What’s that? The back? No, we don’t have to look at the back. This thing is just great the way…

Phantoms Back

AHHHH!!!!! What? Who?? Where am I?? My head hurts.

Excuse me, I must die now.

(no actual Tapelegs were hurt in the writing of this post)

Bonus Question: Which one is more expensive?

Peoria Does Us No Favors

The AHL rollout continues, and here is the latest monstrosity, courtesy of the Peoria Rivermen:

Meh

My impression from this? Meh. But wait, there’s more…

64C2Abf9B40E8C0C2Feeca10C2B67B9D.300

Let’s break this one down.

Socks – Not bad

Jerseys – Meh

Pants – Wha?

Jersey with Pants – Holy Crap, That Sucks!!!!!

So, now that I see this, when I think of the Avs jersey? Could be worse.

PSA: Try Before You Buy

This is just a reminder from you friendly neighborhood Tapeleg. Before you go putting your money on the barrel-head for a brand new NHL RBK EDGE jersey (that sure is a lot of capital letters), remember that the new jerseys are going to fit a lot different than the old ones. While that may seem obvious, you may get the early adopter blues when you order online, and find out that your new jersey isn’t as flattering as the old, or is choking the life out if you. If you can wait, try one on when it becomes available in stores. There are way to many questions about the new jerseys to not make an informed decision. Like what does this mean? From shop.nhl.com:

The front crest is embroidered just like the authentic jersey and the single layer screen printed tackle twill shoulder patches (where applicable) are sewn directly to the jersey.

Especially at these prices. $114.99 for a sight unseen Premier (replica) jersey? Head my words.
