Hockey comes to me early today. With a 10:30AM game (more like 9:30) on NBC, followed by the Avs at 1PM, it’s a good day to have off from work. Looks like it’s laundry and being a couch potato for me. Watching hockey while clutching the coffee as opposed to a beer. It’s hard to see the puck through morning squintty eyes.
The day starts off well enough, with the Bruins beating the Red Wings 6-3 on national TV. Tim Thomas is awesome in net, and even though he has his faults, he makes for an exciting game. Every time he comes out of the net, I think there is no way he will get back in time, and yet, there he is. I know the Bruins wouldn’t trade him, but it sure would be great to have him in Avs country.
As soon as one game ends, another begins. The Avs are on a win streak that should have been happening earlier in the season, when it could have made a big difference.
A few thoughts and notes from the game:
– As soon as I saw Mick MaGoo was reffing the game, I was worried. The first period looked like the death of 5 on 5 hockey in the NHL. Weird period
– The Avs take the lead in the 3rd, 2-1, off of a Laperriere goal (there aren’t many of those, so make them count). The Wild come back 22 seconds later to tie it up. All season, I have seen the Avs give up leads, but this is ridiculous. Even when they play like they want to win, or should be winning, they hand it back to the other team.
– Ossi Vaananen was getting his tough on. Where the hell was that all season?
– It’s not often that Joe Sakic gets checked, but today he was, which happens. The disappointment for me is that no one stepped up and made the Wild pay.
– One point for the Avs, two for the Wild. As disappointing as it is to lose, at least something came out of it.
Next up, Ducks and Vancouver on Yahoo.com. It’s Hockey Day. My favorite day of the week. Everyday should be Hockey Day.

Dang right every day should be hockey day. Red Wings lose, Avs get a point, and Brad May is playing in another uniform. Not perfect, but close.
I feel your pain on the early-morning games, except that it started at 12:30 here and not 10:30. Still, I had a late night, and didn’t end up getting up until 2:15 (in my defense, it was really 1:15). Missed all but the third, but I heard that Timmy rocked again. People were speculating that if the Bruins thought they would make the playoffs, they should trade for a “real” goalie. It was the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. He’s never pretty, but he gets the job done, especially when they most need it- a playoff goalie if I ever saw one.
“Even when they play like they want to win, or should be winning, they hand it back to the other team.” That is the thing with the Avs, and almost all games against Minnesota. It feels like we won, and we never actually seem to.
