Winter Classic Part 1

Pre-game and First Period

I guess I may be updating throughout the game, but not at the expense of enjoying the game. Being right on the river in Detroit, I get to see the CBC version of the broadcast. Don Cherry is rather under dressed for the event, especially compared to the Heritage Classic a few years ago.

Everyone is talking about how bad the ice is going to be, and the snow is sticking as soon as the zamboni passes by, so this is going to make for some strange passes. Tape to tape? Good luck. Getting in the general vicinity of the person you are passing to is going to have to be enough today.

If anything, no matter how you or I feel about the event, the players, at the very start of it, are having a great time. Maybe it’s just the unbelievable circumstances involved, or it’s the snow coming down as hard as it is, but at least they are smiling.

Worst position to be in today? Healthy scratch. Can you imagine being the players who have to watch from the sidelines?

“God Bless America?” Really? What about the regular national anthem?

21 seconds in, we have our first goal????? Crosby to Armstrong, and it looks like the tone is set. Shoot from the point? Nope, carry the thing in. But Sid had to keep his eyes on the puck, rather than keeping his head up, since the puck never settled down.

Want to hide the puck a little? Pick up a little snow along the way.

The CBC broadcast booth is only about 30 feet from the ice, probably the best seats they have ever had for calling a game.
