Winter Classic Part 4

Third Period

It was mentioned that the Penguins may be putting Vaseline on their sticks. Huh?????

Sam Roberts is going to be playing during the intermission. Who? But if I were at the game, I would be running around the concourse, trying to keep my feet warm.

Third song is being shown on the CBC. They should have gotten the Zambonis to play this gig. That would have made for an event. What a disappointment this is. They can cancel this part of it next time.

Second period shots on goal were 14-2 in favor of Buffalo. Dominating performance? I’d say so.

Game on, and the skating looks like it’s getting back to the NHL level. Maxim Afinogenov has some fancy footwork, something I didn’t see anyone trying for the first period.

The Penguins are having a hard time staying onside.

It looks like the light, fluffy lake effect snow I experienced when I was in Buffalo over the the winter in 2004. Another dry scrape on the way?

Finally, a scrum in front of the net. Now this truly feels like an NHL game.

Sindey Crosby with the Spin-o-rama shot on net. If it had gone in, highlight reel for sure. But the fat that it still made it on net was amazing.

OK, it’s not looking light and fluffy anymore. It’s coming down.

Did they just say that Conklin has gone 4-0? What Conklin are they talking about? Is it Ty Conklin’s brother?

The shirtless fans. That’s all I can say.

It’s the 10 minute warning. The horn sounds, and we get one more dry scrape. And even though the dry scrape will help quite a bit, the fact that the teams are switching ends could have a profound impact on the game. From the first period, we saw how the weather affected the powerplay. Stack that on the difficulty of line changes brought on being farther from your own net, just like the second period, and taking a penalty could be the worst thing to happen to a team.

One Zamboni has died, so the dry scrape is taking a lot longer. The top lines get rest, so the last ten minutes should be pretty good.

My DVD recorder just took a crap, and I hope I got everything recorded up until then. So much for double layer DVDs.
That was offsides?!?!?! Really?? Anyone else?

And back to the ice repair kit. Same problem> At least they have no shortage of snow to use for a patch.

Sing-a-longs of “Living on a Prayer” and “Sweet Caroline” are adding to the atmosphere. I’m sure there are some people at home are shaking theirs heads, but when it’s this cold, you have to keep warm somehow. MegMegMeg hates “Sweet Caroline,” even though she is a die hard Red Sox fan.

How happy would the league be with a shootout? Just asking….

71,217 in attendance for the hockey game. Good job, NHL.

More shirtless fans. Fans who take off their shirts are rarely the ones who you want to see without shirts.

the CBC crew is wondering if we are going to see another dry scrape. More ice repair, on the same spot. After the game, they should cut that piece of ice out of the rink and present it to him as a trophy. The man has done an amazing job.

Crosby tries to barrel through two defenders, and even though he goes down to the ice, he doesn’t draw a penalty.

Long changes and the tem minute side switch are having their effect. Lindy Ruff has to use his time out, after the Sabres are unable to make a line change and have to ice the puck. If the teams hadn’t switched ends, the Sabres would have been able to make a change, and the game would have continued on.

One minute remaining: Lots of Buffalo scoring chances, but no scoring. Talk about excitement.

Colby Armstrong is going in the box for hooking, and the Penguins are going to be shorthanded, 4 on 3, starting overtime.
