One Up, One Down: Avs players news

An agent says what?

These people do not want to make me happy. TSN is reporting that Jose Theodore’s agent believes he will be back next season.

Don Meehan also believes the 30-year-old is capable of regaining the form which saw him win the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP five years ago.

Really? That makes one.

“His confidence is good. He’ll be ready. He’s going to work hard this summer. He’ll be positive; he’ll be back,” Meehan tells the Rocky Mountain News.

Anyone remember what he was doing last summer? Oh, yeah…

Can we be a little more specific at what he is going to work on?

My take: The fans in Colorado have no confidence in Theodore, no matter how much he may (or may not) have in himself. If he doesn’t prove himself quickly, the fans will turn their backs on him completely, and the Avs management will look like fools, with GM Giguere misjudging the situation. Right now, in the eyes of the fans, Budaj is the savior of the crease. Budaj should start with the number one job, at least he earned it. Right now, it’s his to loose.

There’s an old sheriff in town.

On the other hand, Avs management got one right when they resigned Scott Parker to a one year deal.

“Scott is an intimidating player who brings energy and toughness to our team,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President & General Manager Francois Giguere.

Really? Ya think? His goatee scares the crap out of me.

Also, Parker loves playing for the Avs. It’s reported he has an Avs tattoo on his body somewhere (let the speculation begin). After coming to the Avs at the trade deadline, it was believed that his attitude was part of what kept the team going on it’s sustained run at the end of last season. Unlike Brad May, who was traded to the Ducks at the deadline (good riddance), Parker was a popular player, evidenced by the numerous Parker jerseys you see being worn at Le Can on game days. May jerseys? Not so much.

There have also been a few other signings so far. I’ll get to those later. For now, I will thrash about in the simultaneous agony of possibility and giddy excitement of a serious beat down to come.

  1. the problem is that getting rid of Theo for a season will cost more than just keeping him, by the time you factor in signing a new backup goalie.

Besides Budaj needs a season of being the full #1.. we know Theo won’t challenge him, which means Coach Q won’t get his itchy goalie fingers going.

  2. I would like to know where everyone is getting their numbers. I have heard 4 million next season, and the more reasonable 2 million a year over the next two years (spreading the damage out, you know). No matter, I think it’s worth the money. The fan loyalty the Avs would earn back (not to mention a real shot at winning games) can more than make up for some cap issues. Which the Avs are pretty familiar with anyways.

  3. I do think that Budaj should be the #1. He definetly has the fans behind him. I am still in need of convincing that he can be a #1 all the way through. I would like to see him have the chance. I just don’t know if Coach Q will give that to him, he is very tough on goalies.

  4. Budaj should be #1, but his numbers weren’t all that impressive, either. He’s a good backup or 1B, but not the answer. Unfortunately, Theodore is about 30x worse…
The UFA goalie market is so thin after Giguere and Hasek plus the fact the cap space Theo would take would make it hard to upgrade… maybe a guy like Marc Denis for cheap?

As for Theo, why Hilton? If he’s gonna screw around, aim a little higher.

  5. Tape…

$4M for this season, or $2M/season for 2 seasons, in a buyout ($5.3M to keep him).

The problem with $2M/ 2 years is that a) that’s $2M next year that could be used to sign some of our young talent that we need, and b) the market for a decent backup is crappy this season.

I looked at the problem in my blog, i think you were out of town Part 1

    Part 2
