Is This Bizarro Hockey World?

I am just having the hardest time wrapping my head around some of the things happening in the NHL this season. I will skip immediately to the examples:

Ty Conklin: Stud. What? Why is Conklin now the best thing since swiss cheese was sliced? What is going on? We al remember this, which led to this, and this. He was the losingest goalie in outdoor games until the new year. Now, he’s the man, and nobody misses Marc-Andre Fleury. Makes no sense.

Chris Osgood is kicking ass: This is just a sentence that should be followed with histerical laughter. I can’t understand this one. And now he is going to be a Red Wing for three more years. Remember when nobody wanted him back in Detroit? Now they can’t live without him.

Joe Sakic missing games: This isn’t supposed to happen. I’m making this one go away in my mind.

Phoenix is winning: An infusion of goalie juice was all they needed. Still, it feels strange.

Jose Theodore is winning hockey games: Five starts in a row, culminating in a shutout against Tampa Bay Tuesday. What the heck is going on there?

Anyone else have some serious oddities from the season? Comments are open.

  1. Tomas Kloucek has **two** goals!

Ok, realistically, I got nothin’. The Conklin thing weirds me out… by rights he should be playing in the Estonian league by now.

  2. Nice but from top down I’ll say this.

Ty….Bizarro. I like it though. Good for him.

Osgood…was drastically under-rated by Wings fans and now they see the light. I never understood why they ran him out of town in the first place. I could understand him being a backup but being run out of town? Wow….Good on him for this seasons effort.

Sakic…Geez….I guess we all get a preview at what life is like in Denver without Joe around. It’s a good life with a hard hitting and defensively responsible team. It’s gonna suck if the team still tries to play like they “deserve” to win on “talent” alone.

Phoenix…Just goes to show you what a good goalie with confidence and mad skills can do. He made this team believe in themselves because he stole a few games early on. That gave them the ability to play at a higher level. Not sure if that lasts for the rest of the season or not but I like what is happening in the desert.

Theo…my God…The AVs have finally started to play in front of him while he is in net. There were times last year where he looked awesome but the AVs refused to get a goal. Then there were times where he reciprocated by refusing to stop a puck when they did score. Maybe…just maybe…they’re on the same page now. It couldn’t happen at a better time.

Other oddities? How about JM Liles and lack of production? What about the Rangers and the lack of wins? Those guys should be challenging Ottawa for top spot. San Jose’s home record is a bit puzzling too (9-9-4?) Outside of the Coyotes they are the only team in the west who hasn’t won 10 games at home this season.

  3. All of those are crazy.

Marian Gaborik is scoring on breakaways.
Something he never used to do before this season, really.

San Jose? Really? Weird. I suppose Cheechoo isn’t really having a great season. That might be part of it. Also there is Marleau…

  4. hey, not a comment, but I don’t think I can email you from my server through here. Anyway, check your aol email for a FWD from me- “joe in the cup” I think you’ll like it. It’s my friend’s kid.
